My Autumn Holiday On The Beautiful Gozo Island - Malta, Part 1

Gozo means “joy” in Castilian, the language of one of the powers that ruled the Maltese Islands over the centuries. Gozo, or Għawdex in Maltese, was first inhabited around 5000 BC by colonists coming from Sicily and it is known for its scenic hills and fertile land, that made Gozo the center of Maltese agriculture (fruits, vegetables, honey, wine, dairy products).

Interestingly, despite its small population of 37000 and tiny proportions (eight miles long and four miles wide), there are 46 churches on the island, two opera houses and many other places of historical and cultural interest.

We stayed in a wonderful apartment with panoramic sea views in Xagħra, a village that is thought to be located in one of the earliest inhabited parts of the island. With approximately 5000 inhabitants, it is the largest village after Victoria, the Gozitan "capital". In Xagħra you will find the Ġgantija megalithic temples, the Xagħra Stone Circle, fascinating underground caves (Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Calypso cave, thought to be the place where the beautiful nymph kept Odysseus for seven years), the Sansuna Stone (the "rock of the giantess“), Ramla Bay (arguably Malta’s most beautiful sandy beach, also location of a protected sand dune, that is covered with rich, endemic flora) …

Every day of our two weeks stay on the island was fantastic! We went many times to our favourite beach, visited the Azure Window, saw Fungus Rock, the 350-year-old salt pans in Marsalforn, went to the local cinema in Victoria (such a beautiful place!), took a guided tour at Magro Food Village, admired crafts at the Crafts Village, bought lace from one of the oldest shops on Gozo, cooked fresh, local fish from the farmers market and went for a delicious dinner at D'venue in Xagħra, even had a pampering session at Changes Beauty Clinic

Our fifth stay on Malta was as great as the previous ones! Look forward to the next occasion; I am sure it will be as relaxing and delightful as the previous ones!

Below, a selection of photos that we took with our mobile phones (our Canon camera is taking a “healing" break), on my next post I will publish the second part of our album!
